For HM The King
For HM The King
Poetry is not exempt from logic,
nor is kingship from Law. The afternoon
is determined by the Sun, no magic
of words can colour in cartoons
and call the price of death a truthful
fantasy. No king rules in Brigadoon,
yet the King being, makes a crucial
difference. His people want a measure
for office-holders, a rule mutually
binding both the ruler and Treasury
Ministers, so the latter turn over
in media cycles, while the leisure
to survive political persona
is allowed just the King - he the hour
in which they have minutes, the one sober
man at their toxic moment of power.
Charles III - be our good span of time.
More than hot gunmetal of howitzers
can tell, show us how Law is made sublime.
